A doula provides ongoing, non-medical guidance during pregnancy, childbirth and the period afterward. I am there to support you, and your partner, with information, peace of mind and confidence. Not as a replacement for your midwife, but as a complement. I guard the space for your wishes, emotions and choices.

Whether you choose for a birth at home or a hospital birth is, with or without medical intervention: I am here to help you stay in control. After all, you know your body and the situation best.

Where does the word "doula" come from?

The word doula originates from Ancient Greek and literally means serving woman. In the 1970s, the term was reintroduced by American anthropologists who studied the effect of continuous support during childbirth.

They found that women who were accompanied by another woman required fewer medical interventions and experienced their delivery more positively.

Today, the doula is often seen as a kind of birth coach: someone who helps you go into your labor informed, supported and confident, your way.

Why choose a doula?

Research shows that doula counseling has a positive impact on the course of childbirth and on how you experience it. The benefits are not only emotional, but also supported by evidence:

  • Increased satisfaction and a more positive experience

  • Shorter duration of childbirth

  • 50% less chance of a cesarean section

  • Less use of pain management

  • More likely to have a spontaneous, vaginal delivery

  • More likely to get a good start on breastfeeding

  • Lower risk of maternal and infant complications

The power of continuous support

Where midwives and doctors often walk in and out, a doula remains in constant attendance. That makes all the difference. Not because you're not strong enough, but because you don't have to do it alone.

A doula ensures a calm environment, providing overview and safety, especially when things are tense or overwhelming. And it works: women often feel more empowered, heard and in control during their labor with a doula by their side.

The presence of a doula also creates space for partners. They no longer need to manage everything or stay constantly alert to what’s happening. With someone else keeping an eye on the bigger picture, they can let go of the practical concerns and focus fully on being present with the birthing mother. Many partners later say they felt more confident and emotionally involved during the birth thanks to the support of a doula.

What do I do as a doula?

My guidance is tailored to your wants and needs. That means:

During pregnancy:
We have several conversations in which we discuss your ideas, preferences and any fears. We prepare you practically and mentally for childbirth. You will learn what your options are, what to expect and how to go into the process with confidence.

During childbirth:
I am there constantly, as a steady and trusted presence. I help you (and your partner) with breathing, postures, moments of rest and emotional support. I monitor the atmosphere, help with communication and am the calm in the storm.

After childbirth:
We look back at childbirth together, discuss how you feel and what you need in the first period. You can also ask questions about recovery and breastfeeding. This is how you consciously conclude this special process.

In addition, if desired, I also offer guidance in the weeks or months that follow. For example, in the transition from home to work, or in the search for balance between motherhood and your career. In my role as corporate doula, I support women in shaping working motherhood, with an eye for both their professional and personal needs. Learn more here.
